Cove Industries: A Bastion of EMC Solutions

Cove Industrial Enterprises specialises in EMC enclosures and has developed its own exceptionally high standard of protection based on its expertise in Tempest standards derived from a whole host of demanding military and ruggedised civil projects. EMC-CIE goes beyond the levels required by the EMC Directive, providing higher manufacturing quality levels that increase electromagnetic emission protection.

EMC-CIE delivers enclosures that leave no ‘listening holes’ to breach security or release no emissions that are likely to create even the slightest interference. Combining its knowledge and expertise with the most advanced CNC manufacturing equipment, Cove’s metal fabrication capabilities simply barricade emissions in and out, leaving no room for escape or entry.

Key to Cove’s effective system is high level software, providing easy flow and control throughout manufacturing, starting with Radan CAD/CAM for design input and manufacturing control to Fabritrack, fully utilised by the company to provide highly efficient process control and quality monitoring throughout. Fabritrack provides real time tracking by bar coding and can identify the exact position of any job any time whilst also providing accurate costs.

Cove manufacturing begins with DXF files which are taken in directly, even by email, from its customers then converted for the Radan CAD/CAM system. Where necessary the company can assist at all levels with design to Tempest levels if required, to provide the ultimate in EMC. An abundance of successful projects litter Reception at Cove, all providing valued testament to its capabilities, ranging from laptop enclosures for foundries and chemical plant to industrial and military projects, as well as collapsible point of sale touch screen kiosks.

The company provides full in-house manufacturing with fast turnaround at its three sites at Farnborough, Blackbushe and Hounslow, including CNC punching and bending to extremely tight tolerances for prototyping and volume production of even the most complex forms.

For London’s Millenium Dome, Psion handheld computers were used to log registrations and display vital information to staff. At the time Cove was approached, there was no way of recharging the equipment or even of uploading program updates. In just a few weeks - four weeks prior to the opening of the attraction - Cove completed a system of racking to plug in up to 90 Psions for recharging as well as data uploading, downloading and reprogramming. The system, which Cove assisted with the design and then manufactured and tested, comprised 90 chargers and 270 handheld Psions.

“Everything we do at Cove has an EMC application,” said Gordon Day, Managing Director. “ We can even take failed EMC tested equipment from other suppliers and rebuild it to a better standard. We produce to very exacting customer specific manufacturing and requirements, providing the highest quality service at extremely cost effective prices.”

Cove is essentially a metal working company, producing simple panels, covers and boxes as well as the most intricate of designs. “We excel in engineering solutions for manufacturing, taking EMC enclosures for example,” said Gordon Day, “and turning them into economical propositions for production whilst maintaining EMC standards. Our expertise lies in finding the

means to reduce and even prevent emissions by shaping to close tolerances, gasketting and a host of alternatives.

Cove Industries, based in Farnborough was established in 1962 and comprises entrepreneurial ISO 9002 companies Cove Industrial Enterprises, an engineering solutions and fabrication company, and Cove Plastics who specialises in dip moulding.
