Haefely Expand in UK

(Advertorial)

The Beginning

Back in 1904 Emile Haefely founded the company in Neuewelt near Basle, it remained a family run business until 1989 when a management buy out transferred ownership. Many of the technical innovations implemented by the founder Emile Haefely himself are still very much in evidence throughout the world today.

We Developed

A new era began in 1993, when the Haefely - Trench Group was founded, uniting haefely with Trench Electric of Canada and Messwandlerbau of Bamberg, Germany. The acquisition of Tettex Instruments AG in 1995 was another step towards expanding the product range and making the company more attractive to the customers in the systems test market.

In 1997, CVC Capital Partners Ltd, a British based capital equity provider, purchased the Haefely Trench Group. CVC is a financial investment firm and has no related business which ensures that Haefely Trench retains its independence as a specialist in the fields of High Voltage and EMC manufacturing. The objective of CVC in this acquisition is to provide solid financial backing to assist Haefely Trench in expanding its business.

Today, Haefely Trench is a well known and reliable single source supplier of High Voltage and EMC Test Systems with an excellent reputation based upon an extensive range of Test Products. Customer support is guaranteed by a vast worldwide network on well trained local representative offices and service engineers.

Haefely Trench AG currently employs some 430 people with production plants in Basel, Reinach and Dietikon.

New UK Facility

With the potential size of the UK market, expansion was an obvious decision and even more so when linking it to their philosophy to offer more services and better response to customers needs. Hence in 1996 operations commenced in Letchworth Hertfordshire.

The facility is shared between EMC, High Voltage and Tettex divisions a new company was formed whose name reflects the diversity of interests. Haefely Trench Tettex Limited, HTT for short. Although when it comes to EMC Test Equipment everyone still knows us as Haefely.

In March '96 Ray Canning was appointed as Sales Manager to head up the EMC operation. Ray has a wide range of experience in the test and measurement industry having been with Voltech, prior to this, 12 years with Analogic Corp of Boston USA and 15 years with Marconi Instruments where he started his career.

Following a very successful beginning, HTT (UK) Ltd has had to expand its facility to new and larger premises. The new facility incorporates both sales of High Voltage and EMC products together with Service, Calibration and a new Demonstration capabilities but also includes the sales of products for Military and Civil applications from Thomson CSF communications thus permitting HTT to offer a better response to all our customers needs.

Our Products

Inside View: PEFT 4010

Few would deny that with the myriad of test equipment available, all the boxes look very similar. However, with Haefely the difference is under the bonnet. If you were to take any other instrumentation and set it alongside Haefely and remove the covers the quality of Haefely would be immediately obvious.

Our research and development teams in Switzerland employ only the latest techniques to ensure quality and performance while keeping costs down. Product design, manufacture and final testing have been the subject of a re-engineering programme under the auspices of Coopers and Lybrand, EMC products are now manufactured to order, using a CANBAN system which, enables the minimum of stocks to be held, again helping to keep costs down. Using this process EMC products can be ready for shipment , one day after an order has been received in Reinach.

Recent Introduction

EFT (Electrical Fast Transient) Burst Tester
PEFT 4010

Suitable for such applications household, industrial, medical, telecom, etc. The PEFT 4010 is a fully compliant stand-alone system for testing in approval laboratories, develop-ment departments and on the design bench. In addition to being a top quality EFT generator, PEFT 4010 offers interactive communication with the PESD 1600 ElectroStatic Discharge Generator. This is a fully compliant solution for IEC 1000-4-2 and EN 61000-4-2. Now with the increased facility of optical communication for programme control and data logging when used with the new PEFT 4100.

Approval engineers will find the system invaluable for reliable reproduction of test procedures, using the internal memory facility, to store standard EFT and ESD test routines (IEC 1000-4-2, 1000-4-4, etc.). Integration into the Haefely Trench WinPATS software package, together with other Haefely Trench instruments, increases the power and flexibility of this system.

ElectroStatic Discharge Tester

The PESD 1600 ElectroStatic Discharge, according to IEC 1000-4-2, EN 61000-4-2 and part of EN 50082-1, EN 50082-2. Features include: discharge voltage up to 16.5 kV, polarity switching, microprocessor control, RS232 interface, remote control from WinPATS software, test finders for air and contact discharge.

The new PESD 1600 is lightweight and ergonomically designed for user comfort. PESD 1600 is fitted as standard with an RS 232 fibre optic interface for remote control. This feature allows full function programming from a computer or the Haefely Trench PEFT 4010. Batch sampling for quality control is made more efficient with a printout obtained from the system controller.

It is a battery powered device, but in the case that the battery is exhausted during testing, the standard recharging unit can be connected, set to charge and operate.

European Standards and the Product Range

The complete range of IEC 1000-4 (EN6000-4) series standards, relating to mains borne interference, is covered by the Haefely EMC product range. Test equipment is available to simulate effects such as Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), Electrical Fast Transient/Burst (EFT), Surge (Lighting) and Line effects (drop outs, brown outs etc). A separate product line has been recently introduced to measure the effects of mains flicker and harmonics in electronic products covered by IEC 1000-3-2& 3-3.
